Its time for a breather after a long semester. Year 2 has indeed been a fulfilling one albeit the busyness. You learn to priorities your schedule and even your aims in life. One can't simply try to achieve everything and only to end up with nothing. Before i embark on yet another hectic term, i need the big B word... Break

Not even a broken luggage wheel is gonna ruin my holiday plans. I took a short trip to the skate shop in the neighbourhood and replaced the wheels with some heavy duty skate-worthy ones.. Applause..

Its been a little over a week since my first CA and it already feels like i'm thrown back to full throttle. However school has been more kind than the pre-CA days, giving me time to enjoy some movies, games and books. Well life isn't all about studying yo..

I was quite stressed and depressed over the last CA, the breath was immensely huge leaving me suffocated in the amount of medicine... Quite literally... HAHA These are the things in life you live to fight for, to be passionate about. However unlike sports where you push and know your physical limits, knowledge has no boundaries. We just have to keep trying i guess. Life long learning is much easier said than done, its an attitude, a belief...

We are all fighters, hugely resilient ones. And its really not easy so lets fight on:)

Serious stuff aside, i've been on some retail therapy and it has been effacious! Bought a penny loafers recently from evilbay together with a espadrille from this website, www.ropeysoles.com. Espadrille is like a perfect summer shoe to wear around and feel like you're in the french reviera. Ahh thats until the rain comes... Then you know you should just keep it at home...

Uniqlo is like my favourite shop in orchard now. OMG, this totally makes me sound like a himbo. Well, i went to the one at 313 after my exams and i just thought that its the perfect place to shop for wardrobe essentials. I've been wanting some oxford shirts for sometime now and uniqlo has them in the perfect cut i want. More than just that, they have nicely faded jeans and washed chinos at a reasonable price too. Cutting is quite flattering as well, thanks to the fact that its japanese designed. All guys should just shop at uniqlo!

I'm a big fan of vintage eyeglasses. Especially acetate ones, hand polished and riveted to connect the temples to the frame. They exude style subtly and the appeal is timeless. Gosh... you've got to check these pics out!

After a careful deliberation, i bit the bullet and decided to buy a new watch. Yes its a painful experience because it only means that i have to scrimp on every penny for the rest of the month. Most of my money are usually spent on my love.... Music of course.

But nothing beats listening to the intricate oscillation of the balance spring, like a heart pumping at 21600bph, never failing to capture every moment in a tiny dial. Ahhh... priceless

Now is high time to study, keep up and be on the ball. At least the holiday mood is behind me already and i know it because my conscience is nagging me to study everyday. After all the dry topics about MicroB and Pharmaco, its nice to have something less taxing on the brain. It makes me appreciate what the new curriculum is about; the inclusion of ethics and patient based programme do make learning more enjoyable though i have to admit that the assignments are not fun stuff.

Its crazy how time flies cause its already academic week 9! We had a recess week on week 7 which was a timely break for me to catch a breather. Its one of those moments where u consolidate all of you, your thoughts, your action. Have an action plan for the next phase. And go webcast all the lectures you ponned of course!

My OG band, otherwise known as OG3 band, took part in Quintfac Bash's superstar despite all the 'challenges'. Firstly 2 of our band mates quit which leaves us with a skim 3 piece band. Then the organisers informed us that they are only providing the drum set which means we have to bring our own amps. Yes its almost ridiculous so we pull out last minute only to be given the guilt trip... Damn we shouldn't have fallen for that actually. We actually met to practice on the morning of the day itself and took a cab over after that. The turnout wasn't quite a bad as i'd expected but its was a really poor one from our fac. Well, we pulled off quite a good performance though! One of the judges commented that we were really tight despite having a 3 piece band, and i'm glad everyone enjoyed it! Mayank and Josh performed 'Man in the Mirror' which was fantastic and swoon-worthy. Jipson and Charles played a jazz tune which i can't remember at the moment. Though none of the Med contestants made the way to top 3, we are all winners in my opinion. At least we made our faculty represented and were clearly the crowd favourites! The sad part here is that we didn't take any photo at all.

IFG Tennis Champions!

Sean finally posted these photos on FB last night. He did an awesome job snapping up those pics and covering us throughout the whole 2 weeks. Thanks alot!

This year IFG saw medicine being placed in the same group as arts and engine, thats 3 out of the top 4 of last year's IFG being placed in the same group. SDE being the organisers were quite hush hush bout it(they were placed in the other group...) But that definitely did not deter us and we gave a good fight to those in our group. Engine was a narrow win for us while arts managed to beat us narrowly too, they had an undergrad who was 38 years old! And its rumoured that he coaches part time too.

We met business in the semis and i remembered playing 2 tall angmohs who were exchange students from germany and netherlands, yea jeremy and i lost that particular match though we would really love a rematch cuz we were playing badly that day. However we still managed to secure an overall win for semis!

Finals was a face-off between us and arts... again. It kinda happened last year too when we won them in the group stage, only to lose them in the 3rd-4th placing. Well, thank God the line up was on our side that day. Everyone really played their best tennis and we went on to secure a victory for Medicine!!! Sorry arts...

I think what made our team the champion isn't because of a star player which other facs have, we are more even out as a team in terms of skill. I feel that its the whole faculty spirit which is clearly evident in our enthusiastic supporters! Thanks for coming down!

The pace in school is almost like a stream roller on full throttle now. So much for my initial plan to take the time to enjoy this new year, make some new friends, get acquainted with old ones. We're now on the start of week 6 which might be a good thing as week 7 is RECESS WEEK! It'll be a well needed break for me to catch up on all the forsaken mugging over the past few weeks.

This year's DnD was held in a rather unique location, the organisers probably didnt think much into accessibility and decided on Amara Sentosa. The venue itself was decent but location is just 2 thumbs down. It didnt help that i needed to bring my guitars all the way in without the car.

Anyway, to those who refuse to come, be ashamed of yourself! Get jealous cause you missed out on all the fun! And most importantly, you missed catching the OG3 band perform!

My dear friend had always been a joy to me through the many years i've known him. This friendship probably stretched all the way back 10 years ago or so in sec 1 when i know him as the St Pat's player. Back then life was probably alot more simple. 5 years later, and we became team mates in Victoria junior college. Tennis twice a week plus the 2 major 'A' division seasons was probably one of my highlights in VJC, and i believe it is for Ka fai as well.

I can recollect the evenings we had after a tiring training talking about life, girls, school. He was a great listening and could always find a way to cheer you up. We did the most retarded things together, stealing the court's keys as well as the lighting keys and played tennis til we're so exhausted and burnt. Or dragging a team mate by his four limbs out of the courts to celebrate his birthday and get scolded later. There was a training whereby we couldn't access the ball storage area and had to climb over the spiked fence. Whatever i can remember is merely a fraction of the fun we had.

2006 'A' Division 3rd,4th placing match is probably the last tennis i had with him. We partnered and managed to win and even the score to 2-2 against the opposing school, leaving the decider match to the last doubles game. I will always remember that match Ka Fai.

It was around 2006 when he also started his drumming craze and according to Liang Hong, Ka Fai was into hardcore practicing. I heard him when he just started and heard him a year later when he was at my place jamming. He was already playing drums for his church and had an arsenal of hot chops at his fingertips. We did a recording together with Deyang singing, Daniel on bass, i on guitar and John on sax. Truly memorable.

Ka fai decided to end it all on May 2010. You will always be remembered.

Lately i've been getting back to the courts, managing a few hits a week albeit the difficult weather. Got myself a new racquet too as it was time to retire my faithful old racquet which saw me through 7 years, yes it was emotional... If you wanted to know, i didn't get the Federer one, the Nadal one nor the Murray replicas. Racquets are really personal instruments, and big companies which sell them lied. You can't play like Fed just because you owned the replica racquet. The latest nano technology combined with memory foam interwoven with elastic graphite fibres are really just a bunch of bull. Its just another paintjob;) I got a simple japanese made Yonex.

My barricades(tennis lingo for the Adidas flagship shoe) still fit but the synthetic material unlike leather, do not take aging well at all especially after 4 long years. Boy, i just spent on a new racquet and now i have to go shoe shopping soon. Who ever said tennis was cheap right...

Since returning from Europe, i've been hitting with this regular group which plays almost everyday. Most are working adults and expats with a few students here and there. Whats most interesting is how serious these people are about their sport. I swear i bring the least racquets cuz they actually do bring 3 or more racquets like a professional. The pros normally have 5 identical racquets for their matches as they snap strings during match and they might have some strung with slightly lower/higher tension to accommodate for their day's form. A recreational player would have many racquets of different kind as he can't make up his mind which one to use. If Federer won yesterday then he might just be using that very racquet!

I met this girl from my previous session of whom i've not gotten to know her name. She told me she had alot of tennis dresses, so i replied '50?'. Another dude said 'what 50? thats under estimating her... Its 55!' WHAT?! The best part is that she's only be playing for a year! Wow... must have sucked being her parents. Her tennis dresses are branded of course and they cost 100ish. I honestly don't think nike has that many dresses in a few seasons combined. So this other dude went 'so how many bikinis do you own' and she went '12' in a nonchalent manner. I didn't think much into it at first until she mentioned that bikinis are really expensive, costing 200ish on average.

Wow! i could even spell that backwards again, WOW! An obsession?

Not anymore. I should bother to update this little domain of mine in the ever expanding world of html right? Yea its not a question anyway. So where do i start from? Exams? Europe?

I think i did mention about the exams in my last post and how i was glad its over. I have to say that the M1 exam(otherwise know as year 1 professionals) was a really stressful episode. All the days struggling with your notes was no joke. It was consuming my life at that time and every part of me felt so burdened.I'm not sure where this stress came from but it sure was scary.

Thank God this whole thing came to an end sooner than expected. I think life is always like that, you'll realise that you're stronger than you made yourself up to be. You're an actor playing out a new scene, strolling through the wheel of time. Need a little luck from somewhere all the time:)

We left for Europe 1 day after the last paper on 20th May. Not a single accommodation booked. All we had were the return air ticket, a Eurail(europe train pass) pass and a backpack. Madness.

Its finally over and i'm so glad it is. I just bought a 2nd hand Arcteryx backpack for $150 yesterday, a steal considering its 1 month old and cost $400 new. Now i'll need to pack my bag and settle the hostels for amsterdam and berlin.

Went to get a last min haircut yesterday as well then met up with emily and natasha. John was suppose to come, i guess i'll catch him when i return before he flies back to New york.

It has been a race of different sorts, running through my head. Its hard to describe the immensity of the expectations u get, not from others, but yourself. The desire to push further and know that perhaps there might not be a limit, and to want to find it(or never). Its surreal when i reflect upon my life, like a soothsayer on a crystal ball. To see how amazing and colourful things can be, like autumn spring summer and winter, life has its seasons.

I wonder how things would turn out if i had just taken a step differently, met one friend less, did one less mistake. It seems as if all is too precarious to be left to chance and it was always something more guiding me along.

Thank God for all these. I never like to think of myself as a holy man, over spiritualising everything, but this is another point in my life i have to just stop and give thanks.

Friends are wonderful gifts, they come in all shapes and sizes and they do surprise. Rainft has been a joy through these years that i've known him and its great to be part of Rainft's 21st today. Something i learned in life is that friends are people u make them out to be. The best thing u can do as a friend is to think the best of them, make them the best person they can be.

The track ahead is a fast down slope. One which u need to prepare for at the end or you'll crash. Get the momentum right or you'll fall short. I'm gonna brace myself and enjoy the journey as much as possible.

I was at Jubilee church last saturday night to join them for a time of praise and worship. Its great to meet those people i grew up with as well as some new faces. I enjoyed their company and it really didn't feel like there was a goodbye in the first place. Age does catch up nonetheless.

Sunday's music prac was quite ineffective and i felt that everyone just needs to cooperate to get the act together. Both singers and musos. It just can't carry one like these week after week. The thing is that the singers don't really know what they want in the song and expect the musicians to deliver. I think communication is really essential in a band. Direction in a band is crucial and it makes or breaks it. I just hope this doesn't happen again.

This week of school proved to be just what i thought. People on gear 5 ready to mug for the next exams. I just need a break. So much on my mind sometimes. Don't know where to start...

Why then is this happier times? Well at least i'm not mugging my life out, and i've been catching up with a few friends. Finished a book by Margaret Court. Cage soccer at kallang followed by LAN with the medicine guys. Europe trip planning. Drums lesson.

It feels good finishing another test! Another milestone in this short stretch of year 1. I remember that youthful vigour i had upon ORD, thinking i'm out to conquer the world. Only to be humbled by the depth and immensity of knowledge.

My joy will only be short lived and soon i'll find myself married to my books again with the major exam coming up in 8 weeks! Dang!

The test coming up is a big mountain for me. Its quite content heavy and basically there's just so much to study. Just 1 more week til it and how i perform really depends on this last week of revision. I think i give myself too much pressure when it comes to these kind of things and i expect only the best. Sadly, i don't have the discipline to keep up with my expectations.

Its overwhelming me sometimes just thinking about it. I don't know what's my goal sometimes, whether be that feeling of euphoria after an exam or to outperform others. One thing is for sure and that is to pass, seemingly simple thing to say but it really takes alot of work behind. Those secondary school days whereby i sit back, relax and still do well for exams are behind. The pedagogy in university demands and rewards hard work.

So much as passed since my last post. Chinese new year was special to me as i've missed it for years when my family was residing in Dubai. Francis birthday party was quite a bash as well and i'm just glad to be keeping in touch with my VJ mates:) And i've had a really short haircut since, but its still not grown on me sadly.

This is the follow up to the previous post in which i was half conscious at that time. Its really quite an eventful week albeit the little setback we encountered with Law. Whatever it is, the floorball people have trained really hard the the results are not reflective of their performance. Kudos to u all:)

The Med-Law debates was indeed hilarious, the motion was 'This house believes that doctors are more attractive than lawyers'. This can't be disputed really. And the challenge was over once we walked in, period! Haha we all had a good laugh afterall. Why so serious?!

Last week's Operation Theatre 3: The elusive promise was a huge success imo. The cast did a really good job and i'm thoroughly impressed with the music which was arranged and directed by Pip and Jipson. Watching it makes u regret not being part of such a great production, or at least try. We'll thats why i mentioned earlier that school is more than just studying, need to be more involved as well.

The coming week will be a much need break for people like me to catch up with the studies. It was quite cheery in school today as everyone was in the valentine's day mood. I got some roses to give to the OG girls, wanted to get Ferrero Rocher for the guys but i didn't have the time to get them.

We had quite an enjoyable time at Asher's place last night feasting on the self-bought ingredients from Cold Storage. Thats also the reason why i didn't prepare for today's tutorial...

I've been teased lately with this girl, and its really quite irritating sometimes. But really, i won't go after someone just like that. need to catch up on the sleep now!

I think i got pretty lucky today! Its not about the Burberry sales, neither is it about any girl. But i got a new shoe, and at a really good price:) I happened to chance upon a sale and they do have some boat shoes so i picked up a pair for $60. The cheapest shoes i've bought in a long time.

I've been on a hunt for boat shoes recently as i love the classic styling and details they bring. I was really close to getting one today but they didn't have my size!

Found them in a store at Haji Lane, its called MONO+ if i'm not wrong. Apparently this japanese brand only produce up to size 42. If its just 1 size bigger...

Then again if i'm rich i would have gotten the one from Ralph Lauren. It was going for over $500! Yes quite crazy indeed...

Nicole Kessa told me that someone from her OG wants me to know about the new EVISU shop in paragon. So i actually headed down to Orchard today with Audrey and Grace after Biochem tutorial, ok it was more for looking for that pair of boat shoes. Please help me people!

What do men care most about? Contrary to what the other gender thinks, we're really very simple creatures with primitive desires. What i assure you is that the cave hunting ape-man and the one you find at home/ in town is pretty much the same. We might have evolved physically but the inside wiring isn't much of an upgrade. See, i know you won't believe me...

The first thing about a man is his stomach. Fortunately, we've reached a civilized way of chowing. Its no surprise we're such fans of meat then, the juicy and succulent ones. Our appetite is insatiable and its true when they say a hungry man is an angry man. A secret for you ladies is that the way to a man's heart is his gut! Haha

Next is the ego which God designed in each of us like a balloon. We love it when its inflated and swollen. We know we're all damn good so don't even start with your comments about our driving. Our muscles are bigger than Rocky's and our height shames your boyfriend. C'mon, who needs Brad Pitt when you have me.

Of course we're interested in the miss. Though we hate to admit it, girls are definitely an integral part of a man's life. Yes they're such a nuisance sometimes and all they care is whine. The worst part is they want to come along for boy's night out. There are those who even drag us into the lingerie shop and make us look like a fool, or seeks a 'do i look fat' opinion. But despite all these, you know we love you the way you are.

I needed an afternoon off for no reason whatsoever hence i decided to hit town! Wala, it was quite a trip to put everything aside and enjoy undisturbed time. Spending time alone is actually quite therapeutic especially so when we're stuck with people around 24/7.

It was unfortunate to have my left wrist muscle(Flexor Carpi Ulnaris) strained last week during Med-Law Cheers training. People have been showing me love but as much as i'd like to reply politely, the truth is that its not good. Yes i'm having some left 'hand'-icap literally. At first i thought its no biggie since i'm a rightie, however its more restrictive than i would have imagine. I can't really lift anything heavy with my left hand now. When i hit the roads, i dare not ramp the accelerator as i'm just dependent on the right for serious steering. Shampooing is a chore. Bad

I regained my right hand mobility just recently. Straining the rotator cuffs was no joke, i had problems bring my arm overhead and performing medial rotation. This sucks cuz back in army, i was never seriously injured before, not even a sprain. Now it seems i'm quite prone to these little injuries. Need to be more careful...

How does white loafers sound? I saw a really beautiful one which looked like a cross breed of loafers and boat shoe in Pedro. I could feel all my senses telling me to buy it which i almost did, however it was probably the parasympathetic senses that i hesitated. The white leather just didn't feel sturdy like how men shoes should be. AHHHH!!! I WILL NOT BUY ANY SHOES THIS MONTH! Thats what i told myself after purchasing a pair of Redwing boots online, burned a hole in my wallet...

Skeletons in the closet are meant to be kept, safe and secure from others. I think most of us do have a past that is less uncovered and by others stumbling upon it surely leads to uneasiness and insecurity. Of course, the list is not exhaustive. Relationships, broken family, hurts, violence can be a person's biggest bane. Being an ordinary being, i have my share as well and it'll remain private.

People mature and yes they do change. Sometimes its such things which make us grow deeper as a human, one with empathy and not apathy. A broken down world can only be seen clearly with the imperfect eyes. Its easy to be critical over simple faults and laugh about others misfortunes. Its even easier to step over people the way we once experienced.

I'm no guru but here's something which worked for me. Getting over is the first step, most importantly forgiving yourself. Blame the past you and accept the present me. Everyone deserves a second chance and that includes oneself!

Its rare for me to write something like that, but today we hit a block in someone's life. I'm not sure how hard it went but its sad to see him live in past hurts. Then again its a brave thing to acknowledge it and i respect that.

Quoting Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump, "My momma always said, Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get." Embracing life in its entirety includes such periods:)

Today i heard the most preposterous statement ever by a group of girls giggling after passing a vendor of a famous local brand, commonly associated with gays. Give those guys a break already. I'm sure you won't like to get undressed visually or checked out at when you're wearing lingerie. I feel for those souls...

'Straight guys can't dress well!' exclaimed the petite girl as she was cheered on by 3 friends. Nothing can be further from the truth. I'm not here to defend my sexuality or fashion sense but stereotyping guys in such a way is absolutely ungrounded and almost heresy.

C'mon if you're speaking of fashion, which gender is the one with the most bizarre and outrageous taste?! The worst that a guy can get is wearing a red underwear on the outside, oh wait the girls find it hot anyway, and only 1 guy did that. Girls on the other hand are the crazy lot, like putting jeans on after waking up and you get a camisole top. Or perhaps squeezing into tight fabrics and call them tubes. Then there are delusional girls who imagine their clothing articles as food such as the spaghetti top.

So why are guys marked down by doing the same thing. We wake up and fit on jeans and its called sloppy, we squeeze through our tank tops and its called sick. Honestly, such opinions are formed by the female gender. Guys really have no problem accepting their friends dressed in these manner. The fact is that guys do dress decently, we cover up whatever we're suppose to and not invite stares(unless you're hot like me... Hahhaa kidding)

Straight guys are ones you can count on and know that they accept you for who you are and not who your clothes are. They might have a bad hair day or two but that does not disqualify them in any way. We're always forgiving and accepting when the girls are in fashion disaster and not quick to judge.

So dressing well is purely relative. We got ours, and you got yours. So before we comment on your patent pumps and feather boa, lets celebrate our differences. Make love not war:)

First week

School days are back which means waking up at 6am everyday. Greeting 3 different train lines enroute to school is no joke. I sure wish i'd get a car soon since i have my license already:) Or it'll help if the circle line to bouna vista or kent ridge is opened.

If there's one word to describe this week, it'll be tiring. No, the work isn't the cause but its the nocturnal shift which my body has adapted to from the holidays. I found it really hard to keep my eyes open during short lectures. I think i shall make it a point to sleep at 11pm latest!

This week's pace is still pretty easy. The gang of 4 still managed to have 2 gym sessions, 2 out-of-sch luncheons. Keeping fit and healthy is the most important after all isn't it? That's the whole reason why we're studying anyway.

Clinicals was postpone today so i spent the time at the library trying to revise but ended up napping. Bad! After much persuasion by Lynn, I decided to take a peek at Random Stunts Day(RSD) organised by Judith which i believe is for the Med Law thing. It didn't take much deliberation and i joined in the fun. I did have some experience in these things but thats 5 years ago?! I can't remember nuts. There was this 'extension' we were doing with Zhuan Yi as the flyer, and she was falling in a super awkward position. I lunged over to grab her and ended up with a slight sprain on the right ankle. Heck, its still fun.

I actually visited this place twice in my last week of holidays. With Renee and francis it was a 'China-town' shopping which we wanted to do prior to our dim sum high tea. And with Samantha it was the exact same thing, 'China-town' shopping after our lunch at tanjong pajar. Both times i got duped into thinking i'd really be doing some china-town shopping but landed in the small street of ann siang.

However Sam brought me up Ann Siang hill via the entrance at Tanjong Pajar and it was quite a surprise as i'd never knew of such place. Something worth noting is the cake shop, The Patissier. The cakes are possible the best cakes i've ever tried. Both times i got a slice to share because it is really that ex. I tried the Meringue and the Strawberry Cognac. Heavenly...

Its not easy coordinating a potluck with a group of friends. Not to mention the hassle of opening a house to host us, but Jolene did a great job. It was an evening of fun at her place in Kembangan. I personally went to get freshly-roasted Cha Siew(Marinated Pork) at Ubi and the meat turned out to be succulent:)

A commendable effort by Hongshen as well as he attempted his pseudo culinary skills and prepared beer marinated steaks. I got to say that the steak was tender but the beer was just a bad couple to the beef. Other great dishes which i can remember from the back of my head now is Lynn's friend rice, Gloria's spaghetti bolognese, Jolene's yong tau foo.

Haha having picnic on green grounds littered with yellow leaves seems like something you'd get thousands of miles away. But guess what, bring your mat and head to cluny road for an enjoyable evening:)

I have to say that the pizzas from Casa Verde are amazing. The seafood was generous on the Frutti Di Mare and the Prosciutto e Funghi had fresh mushrooms on melted mozarella. This partly accounts for the united pack i have now during the holidays! Casa Verde is part of the Les Amis group in case you're wondering.

An end to a great year and the welcome of a better one ahead. 2009 will be a special year to me and i believe to many of us. I started the year enjoying the chilly winter at Washington DC and spending time with my family in Dubai, and i'm ending it doing the same thing as well with my family back in Singapore:)

It was an honoured to join an amazing bunch of street percussionist! The Strikeforce! It was an ineffable experience during my short stay with them and i enjoyed every part of it. From the weekday trainings we had at Joo Chiat studios to the single gig which i did with them.

I got an Advance certificate of Theology after taking a 6 month course on Theology at the School of Theology! I remember the crazy hours we have to get there and the struggle we had to undergo to see ourselves through but we made it! Many quit their jobs and left their country just to be there. Our pockets might not have been deep then but the experience was priceless. Not to forget the friendships forged from all around the world. Cheers to all my American, Swedish, Indian, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, South african friends!

Having 2 more marathons under my belt:) Yes i'm proud to complete the Standard Chartard Dubai Marathon 2009 and the Adidas Sundown Marathon 2009. My timing was 4h30min and 8h respectively! Yes quite ridiculous for the 8h one but my friend threw me his racing bib the day before and i agreed to walk it just for fun:)

By God's grace, i succeeded in my application to Med School as well:) This was something which i was deliberating for a long time and i finally took up the courage to do it! Yea i realise that one must dare to chase one's dreams!

Pulau Ubin cycling

Pulau Ubin has got to be the closest u can get to old Singapore besides army. The quaint shop-houses are reminiscent of the days of diesel powered generators and well sourced water. I was told that we would be able to spot wild boars, mouse deers, hornbills and flying chicken here but no luck this time. Dad warned me of the commando trained mosquitoes inhabiting the island and i did inform the guys to bring insect repellent.

It was $2.50 for a single trip on a bumboat which can ferry 12 people. As we stepped into the island, we were greeted by a rustic gravel lane which led up to the 'town center'. Along which were tourist driven trade like bicycle rental and little day restaurants. Try your luck at haggling when renting a bike. Elendrus did a great job and got us good suspension bikes at just 6 bucks for the whole day. It was a worthwhile investment considering the dirt tracks and the bicycle park which we conquered. Please remember to test your brakes and gears before setting off. I offered to swap my bike with jolene's midway as her gears were alittle faulty. I ended up having the chain coming off the gears once and i had to get my hands greasy to put them back.

I would love to finish exploring the whole island which is very possible within a day but we only ventured for a total of 3h. We managed to complete the northern and western trails so its quite an accomplishment. The views from above the knolls overlooking the quarry and straits of johor were quite scenic.

I'm glad i took the time out to enjoy some of what nature has to offer:) Oh we had lunch at Changi Village after that. It was gastronomic. Period.

In my previous post about prawning, we had a little debate about whether those little things are prawns or shrimps. Heck google saves the day!

Shrimp or Prawn?
There is often confusion regarding the difference between a shrimp and a prawn. Physically they look very similar but there is one sure way to tell them apart. In shrimps or carideans the side plate of the second segment of the abdomen overlaps the segments in front and behind. Prawns, most of which belong to the family Penaeidae of the group Dendrobranchiata, have all the abdominal side plates overlapping tile-like from the front. A more fundamental difference but one impossible to appreciate in a single specimen is that female prawns do not brood eggs but shed them into the currents where they develop independently. It would therefore make sense to call all member s of the Penaeidae "prawns" and members of the Caridean "shrimps" and this is what most Australians do. King prawns and banana prawns are names understood in this continent for penaeids sold frozen at the markets. The tiny shrimps bought in cans or froz en are imported carideans. Confusion arises when we hear Americans refer to prawns as "shrimp".

OG3 outing

Its was suppose to be OG3 outing but i guess some of us are away for medical mission trips leaving just the few of us. But its still all fun and we did the more cruel option, prawning!

We learnt a few tricks from the veterans around us judging from the basket full of prawns they have. To start you would need a good bait so we invested in the earthworms instead of the cheap chicken liver they provided. The effect was immediately. The prawns clearly loved the live bait. Then there's technique to catching the little guys too. Firstly you need to be really observant to detect the movements of the floater which signals something on the hook. Next step is to do a quick tug to hook the prawn. Lastly you'd need to work those biceps to bring the catch in!

What terrible news, a great guitar brand tainted with such bad reputation. It won't be long before things really start going down for them. I'm do not own a Gibson and now hearing this, i might not want to own them. Check this out:

Took a quick read last week of the book Dr Kong recommended, Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. Its intense i must say and the stories of success are truly inspirational. Go grab your coffee and your reading glasses for this! I highly recommend it too:)

My right arm is doing much better now after my struggle with a rotator cuff injury for many many weeks. I actually did swimming 2 days back without the pain. Last week was also the first in a long time since i've stepped into a gym and have the confidence to lift some weights. Its a pretty good feeling actually to come back from bumming days. My muscles have since atrophied and its high time i start getting in shape once again.

Yesterday's floorball was a joke. The last time i remember playing floorball was at least 3 years back in VJ and for me to hold the stick once again, it felt foreign. The most funny part was when a high ball came and i headed it... Its disallowed apparently. Heck, all in the name of post CA!

I was never a big fan of ramen, and that became history after these 2 days. Yesterday, I popped by holland village after a quick city stroll in Orchard just to check out the new malls and get a feel of what its like to shop in Singapore once again. Met Arun, Ash and gang at Yoshimaru Ramen Bar and it was a gastronomic experience. The stock was rich and the ramen was al dente. The pork literally melted in my mouth. Perfect after a whole day of sleep-derived hunger which i inherited from Asher's sleepover. Sleepover doesn't mean i actually sleep, get it?!

The exciting part of today wasn't the clinical research i had in the morning at NUH, neither was it gym-ing with Hongshen and Arun, neither was it the Red shirt i bought in Armani Exchange, Nor the crazy shopping at had in ION and 313 somerset. It was a bowl of Ramen at AOBA Hokkaido Ramen in ION. Its just opposite the Fish & Co at the basement level. The ramen here is a little thicker and that q-ness just made your mouth watered. You have 3 different kinds of stock to choose from and quite a few interest offerings like some hokkaido crab legs. Good stuff:)

Now i'm craving for ramen even at this hour. Please, i'll marry you if you can cook me good ramen!

We have completed something practical now in med school. This is my 2nd heartsavers course, my first being in army. This time i took away so much more as the instructor to trainee ratio was kept at a minimal. It helps as well when we're in the midst of learning cardiovascular physiology.

I got away with a 97% score for my 1 man CPR and i think thats quite a good try for a first attempt in 2 years!

I finally decided to change my status of being a technology dinosaur. Check out my new Nokia E72! I think its really a great phone as you can push up to 10 emails and surf the web with this. I have 3 different emails now sync with this phone.

Singtel is having a great promotion and hence i paid S$138 only with a 2 years recontract on my student's plan and a $50 voucher. I was the first person to buy at the Hello shop in bugis... Ok cheap thrill. So who needs iPhone huh?!

Nokia&Singtel should seriously pay me for this...

Results are out and i did average. But considering the fact that i wasn't a bio student, i think i should not be disheartened! Everyone in medicine is too smart. Well CA2 are in less than a month's time. I'll need to lock the room, and study!

Physiology is a brand new topic and i really do feel quite lost sometimes. Especially yesterday when i was staring at the patient simulator in the hospital. His heart rate was shooting up, and there was so much going on and i just stared point blank.

Ok i should quit whining and start serious book digestion or devouring... Whatever u call it.

I think its the first time i actually did something during halloween. Who actually celebrates halloween in Singapore right?! Anyway its great taking saturday night off to relax and enjoy with a great company of friends.

'Seven' was playing at DXO and the big group of us flocked down to support them! Great band, great vocals, absolutely amazing people inside:)

Haha i also had some good times with Dad and little brother who were back. They just flew back to Dubai this morning after sending me to school. All alone again!

I sold my baby taylor today and traded my Orville black beauty les paul for an American Standard Stratocaster! What a beauty man... Buying and selling stuff can get u a decent income while schooling:)

The past 2 weeks have not been easy for me. The inclusion of physiology just makes things more demanding. Dad and little brother are back for the weekends to deal with some matters. Anyways this week has its ups too. Little pockets of fun here and there. Alright, off to church!

Spent the entire afternoon clearing my room from a war-torn state to one which 'BOOMZ'. I realised i've been keeping too much things and i found stuff like my sec 4 papers and letters from sec/JC days. I just threw like a quarter of my room away today. Now my room is conducive for studying for my upcoming CA2 in 6 weeks!

I bought a smaller drum set a few days ago to replace the big one i have. I figured i'll give the neighbours some peace and love. Luckily for me, a buyer came and got my old set this morning and i decided to throw in the cymbals for him too. Now i've a drum set without cymbals! Dang... looks like i'll need to spend more cash again.

So now i can just stay all day in my room because i've shifted everything i do into it. Haha

I finished the 10km with a timing of 56mins. Not impressive but not disappointing either given my lack to training. So this brings my total race mileage for the year to 100km already! Two Marathons and two 10km races.

This was quite a fun run with some of our seniors but the crowd prevailed eventually and we got split up in the middle of the race. Lynn is a really fast runner and i've got a hard time pushing my pace because of her! Well hopefully my rotator cuff injuries can recover soon so i'll be able to resume my active lifestyle.

Returning to ACS(I) brought back so much fond memories. A sense of nostalgia greeted me as i entered through the back gate walking over from NUS after lessons. I could associate every corner of the school with a story from those 4 years. It was those years which made a strong impact on me as a person. I think my biggest takeaway from this school was the values which i still hold dear in my heart.

My youngest brother who is returning from Dubai is seeking admission hence i'm paying for his entrance exam as my family is still away. The canteen has expanded, the libary has grown another floor, there is a synthetic soccer field, the new IB block looks amazing. While waiting to meet the relevant personnel, i headed down to the canteen for a bite. Saw Miss Grace Kwee and i sat with her just for a quick chat. Then came a few other of my ex teachers who sat around with us and soon it was a table full. The conversation started with the usual weather questions and things loosened. It took awhile for things to register as we recalled the good old days. Miss Yvonne Lim even remembered that room in boarding school with the 6 of us, Room 333. I was really fortunate to be able to meet so many teachers this trip and i found out that the table i was sitting with was all the Deputy Principals of ACS(I) now! Mrs Yong Lee Har who was my biology teacher is amongst one of the five.

She shared with me her experience being a Deputy Principal and also her desire and passion to continue teaching which she's seeing less now. I was quite shocked when she told me that she has been teaching in AC since 1988, the year i was born. Mrs Yong was really motivating, she spoke of medically related stuff and told me how important compassion is as doctors. Your teachers will always remain as your teacher:) Yes its truly an honour for me to be able to return and meet some of the greatest people in my life. Heroes we often neglect and seldom acknowledge.

The magic number came and passed! I woke up thinking about my CA1 instead of my birthday. I saw the numerous sms greetings from my friends but i wasn't feeling that vibe just yet. I just ignored everyone and head to school on my usual hour ride which involves 3 different trains and 1 bus ride. Its really amazing how i've gotten so far and i wouldn't have imagined that a year ago. Alright i shall quit whining about the test and look on the brighter side instead:)

Well that grueling 3 hours in the examination hall really felt like i was taking 'A' levels all over again. My jacket wasn't enough to shield my hands from the chilly aircon. I have this cold-blooded symptoms, my hands turn really cold when i'm placed in some cold area. And if u grab my hand, it'll feel like your grabbing a dead man's one. HAHA. And trust me when your hand gets cold, the motor functions are severely impaired. I'll write at a fraction of my normal speed and if i'm playing the guit, i won't be able to do my scale runs.

Well, i think i did pretty alright overall and i hope the effort that i put in will pay off! I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed and start focusing on the next quarter of studies. Now its gonna be Physiology and according to my counsellor it means more studying and deeper understanding.

My OG went down to Marche at Vivocity for lunch after that. In medicine, our Orientation Group is kinda ends up as your social group which you'll stick together for lectures and bonding. Honestly, i felt that Marche could do much better with their steaks and the meat category. I was never a fan of the overhyped Rosti and would just be contented with good hot bread which wasn't up to standard as well. Oh well, its tough to find good eats nowadays from those branched restaurants. Hence, i'm a firm supporter of good hawker stalls in which the chef put their heart and soul in their food.

Sentosa was really fun!!! We just went all out and got all sweaty and sticky with a good game of beach volleyball:) I never knew volleyball could be so fun but i ended up straining my rotator cuffs again from the overhead serves. I should really watch out for any overhead actions as the doctor had advised previously. Need to get my right hand back in form!

One of my greatest regret is missing MR. BIG's concert live in Singapore on the night before my CA1. Its a one night only event and i don't know when will they ever reunite again for another tour. I'm a big big big big fan of Mr Big and Paul Gilbert is one of my greatest Guitar Heros! You guys should really listen to their stuff!

Sometimes i wish for a pause button for me to stop and lie still. It seems life is a frantic rush lately and it doesn't help when there's so much round the corner. As one of our prof puts it, the opportunity clock is ticking, and its ticking loudly in my heart. I can hear it and its something to fight with everyday. You want that extra second to slot in another frame but life is fair, you can't insert extra credits.

Now its week 10 into Medical school, 1 week before the first test. Time flies and it seems like yesterday when i shouted ORD and greeted civilian life with a new found zest. All too ready to conquer the world once again but life humbles one. You can't take the world head on alone and not get bruised. Like a good soldier, your buddy is your life. I'm trying my best to cling on to my buddy! I know he won't let go:)

Speaking of which, I remember reading this page in my OCS buddy diary. I chanced upon it while i was packing up my room ready to leave OCS after getting my 1 Bar. He was a great guy, a few years older than i am, an exchange cadet from New Zealand. He said this, 'Sometimes youthful arrogance takes over and it doesn't get you anywhere'. Yea how true it is and i was the perfect example in every way in my younger days.

Very soon i'll be officially out of the 'teenager' category and into what people call 'adult'. A very demanding term which you always hear Dad and Mom equating it with responsibility. In all honesty, i would still love to be a teenager and be worry free. Army robs you of 2 years, a huge price to pay though i'm not discounting the experience and the 'personal molding'(You give us boys and we return you men!). It was like my teenage finale years flashed pass of me. I spent my last 2 birthdays in overseas exercise. The former in Taiwan which i remember sleeping under a blanket of shooting stars the whole night in the jungle. My friends dedicated one tree trunk for me with wishes. Awww... The latter was in Thailand and i can't remember much of it, probably nothing worth remembering. Maybe it was heavy rain, muddy grounds, soaked boots...

Well so there you have it, life's ticking clock. We're fair and square so lets make the best out of it. Seize the day, Carpe Diem!

IFG Tennis

That week was crazy. Playing each night until the lights went off at around 9.50pm at the NUS courts. I had to launder my IFG shirt too cuz we reuse them everyday which means sleeping at 1am. Haha

I'm really proud of everyone in the Med IFG Tennis team. Though we didn't really perform on the last day when we had our semis and 3-4th placing, its still a great team effort after all. What's more important is that i did enjoy myself.

The bad part is that i've gotten this shoulder pain in the middle of that week and it still hurts. I can't diagnose which muscle is hurting even after studying my upper limb anatomy! It hurts especially when i abduct my right arm all the way up and laterally rotate it all the way. It really got in the way when i played the last 3 days and i should have stopped then. Now I'm abstaining from all form of physical strain on my right arm, which is just an excuse for my laziness actually. Haha

Recess week comes as a big relief to me. Catching up on the past 6 weeks of school while having extended periods of sleep is actually quite relaxing. Med school has been like a soccer match, it just goes on and on and you've gotta be on the ball. I do enjoy my time so far and being involved in things like Inter Faculty Games and the recent QuintFac Bash does help. I realised that pacing yourself is quite important because you need to keep up and not burn out on the other end as well.

Honestly, it wasn't easy making new friends with so many new faces. People whom i've never seen my whole life and are 2 years younger than me. The age difference is apparent right from the start and it took abit of adjustment on my part. Its amazing what 2 years can do to a person, well on my part, its like i'm going in a circle. Hey, its not that bad after all, since i lost my late teens to National Service. I'm finding it back now;)

I bought 3 boxes of cereal and 2 cartons of milk to last the recess week, and now i'm already on my last box. It means cereal for dinner when i'm just plain lazy to cook. My favourites are banana nut crunch(simple awesome), maple pecan crunch and the kellogg's honey corn flakes. You'll get addicted once u try them, trust me. Alright, back to studying:) I just bought a new anatomy book yesterday, Gray's Anatomy. Hopefully its as interesting as the TV show. Hahahaha

Great time at Zouk last night for the Quintfaculty Bash. It was quite a blast and i did enjoy myself though medicine didn't really do very well overall. We had around 5 items/entries but only one won, the pageant queen went to Sarah Sim.

The Radial Groove is very serious about bad puns and we obviously don't find it humerus. Haha what an introduction to our band. I'm still trying to get a pic of us playing.

Yellow Ribbon Run 2009

I crashed the inaugural Yellow Ribbon Run last sunday! Elendrus and I stayed over at Asher's place on saturday night and he was procrastinating about it the very morning just because of the rain at sunset way. Anyway, we still managed to make it:)

We kinda started at the 1km mark cuz we were really late! And there was a massive jam at Loyang Ave. Haha

So our pseudo 10km route took us into the prison itself! I have to say it looks better than army camp.

All good things have to come to an end. I come to realise that School of Theology is not what i give to the Lord, my time and money. It is what the Lord has given to me, he has blessed me with so much more than i can imagine. I got into Medical school while undergoing SOT, i got many doors open throughout this period and i'm really so thankful. Cheers to all the incredible and amazing people around me!
